Makai Ouji. Demons, angels, and bishonen. This anime is something to watch!
Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist Episode 1
Never seen a story or animation as beautiful as this. When first saw the previews before even watching Episode 1 the first thought that came across was: Black Butler! Some of you may be wondering why since perhaps in your view they don’t seem to share similarities. Well some of the things that remind me of Black Butler are the obvious Victorian-esque or dress appearance that is close to that of Black Butler. Other much more easier to make parallels are that both anime series deal with demons and angels and demon bound contracts. That is where the similarities end. And actually this is a good thing since hate when anime will aim to borrow certain aspects of another anime series. Mainly anime that breaks away from one that has already been done is better. Although that could just be me. Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist moves away from being the next Black Butler because it involves more action but more of a light atmosphere which has a lot to do with the characters.
Not sure many of you out there know this but the voice of William Twining is voiced by Takuya Eguchi who also recently lended his voice to Hikigaya Hachiman who was the pessimist but observant main male character of Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigaiterru. or My Youth Romantic Comedy is Wrong As I Expected. It makes William Twining become a strong presence in Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist.
While in Black Butler somehow most of the characters were much more serious and gloomy. The story is pretty ingenious as well with an equal mix of comedy and the action present that mentioned before. William Twining quickly becomes aware his family has become bankrupt. Even though he is a dashing young man he now faces problems with how to pay his private school tuition without alerting others how he is broke. While away at his family mansion he discovers a secret place where a demon is released who is named Dantalion. Dantalion is a Grand Duke of Hell and somehow devoted to William Twining because of his connection to Solomon, the ancient King of Israel known as the wisest king who ever lived. William could care less after all with science available in the world something like magic and demons is preposterous. While the first episode still just introduced us to the story and some of the characters from the beginning you can get a feel for the anime and enjoy yourselves.
Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist Episode 2
William in Episode 2 still can’t seem to accept Dantalion as a demon. He continues to push him away. While William is not happy with Danatalion’s interference with his school life William’s close human friend, Isaac.
Isaac , summons a new demon by accident that will hopefully help William. Sytry a new demon with a very angelic appearance makes himself known to William. Sytry too shares a bond with William much like that of Dantalion. We are given hints that he was treated just as tenderly as Dantalion by Solomon who holds Solomon’s soul. Sytry recalls memories of Solomon that show that Solomon cared for him dearly. Although a question arises of why William doesn’t remember either Dantalion or Sytry and their past. Strange, indeed.
Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist Episode 3
In Episode 2 when we are introduced to Pastor Crosby, he seemed to be a threat that would clash with our demons present. In Episode 3 we are proven right. He is part of the church and seems to dislike demons. So his attention is soon diverted to Sytry and Dantalion. William still doesn’t want to accept Dantalion and so Sytry’s life is endangered. Dantalion has now grown exasperated with William not remembering his old persona as Solomon. While William is not thoroughly convinced with all this magic and demon as he calls it “nonsense” the relationship between Dantalion and William Twining is becoming closer. This was perhaps the best episode so far!
With the latest episode the Church seems to be a threat to William and ,of course, all the demons close to William Twining. Story-wise things are getting rather intriguing and still there are some missing puzzle pieces to William’s loss of memories. Kevin Cecil could be the likely culprit but at this point its all speculation.
Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist (12 episodes)
Director: Chiaki Kon
After his uncle’s business fails, William Twining, an intelligent young noble, finds himself in a dire financial situation. With no funds for his school tuition, he searches his house until he comes upon the basement. There, he accidentally summons Dantalion, who recognizes William as a descendant of Solomon, and the Elector—the individual that will choose a substitute ruler for when the Emperor of Hell, Lucifer, rests. From that moment on, William’s life is irrevocably interwoven with the supernatural world as other demonic candidates for substitute king vie for his nomination and Heaven attempts to retrieve his soul.

Opening Theme Song
“Believe My Dice” by Takuya Eguchi & Takuma Terashima & Yoshitsugu Matsuoka & Tetsuya Kakihara
The Opening Theme is full of cool guitar twists mixed with a lot of emotion from the voice actors that sing the song. Very catchy song!
Ending Theme Song
“a shadow’s love song” by Takuya Eguchi & Takuma Terashima & Yoshitsugu Matsuoka & Tetsuya Kakihara
The Ending Theme Song is sung by some of the voice actors of Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist. Both the Opening Theme Song and Ending Theme Song could make the list for some of great-sounding anime theme songs. Good songs the OP and ED. While the Op Song is great to begin the anime series episodes the ED song is a nice close to each episode.
*UPDATE: Instead of reviewing most of the series mentioned in New Summer 2013 Anime Season, Blood Lad, Free!, The World God Only Knows 3, Hakkenden: Touhou Hakken Ibun
2 will stick to doing bulk episode reviews. Also not reviewing The World God Only Knows 3, Hakkenden: Touhou Hakken Ibun 2 since feel that those series don’t need to be reviewed since if you have watched the first seasons you should know your into the series. As for Chou Jigen Game Neptune: The Animation decided against reviewing out of time constraints. *
