EPISODE 1 REVIEW-Shintaro, our main character, is really not who expected to be the main character. I thought going into the series it was going to be the girl with green hair (bad marketing aside) I did like the first episode of the series despite some minor issues came against when first viewing.
Mekakucity Actors turned out to be such a surprise and a good surprise at that! Shintaro who I am guessing is the main character is a shut-in and only ever stays at home. He doesn’t even go to school either. We are rapidly shown that he used to have a very normal life until Ene, a computer artificial intelligence girl, just showed up on his computer and since then has never left his side. When he first met her he found her incredibly cute but eventually grew more obsessed with just being on his computer.
On one of their usual days Ene being the jinx that she is causes Shintaro to spill his soda on his keyboard and it is ruined. It forces him to go out for a new keyboard. A lot of Shintaro freaking out moments occur all of which are rather funny. Things don’t go as expected though. A scary situation crops up and Shintaro meets kids with strange eyes. It is when all this happens that unexpected stuff happens which confuses, a lot! It should be revealed maybe next episode but for the first episode at least very, very confusing stuff happened.
Still Mekakucity Actor’s premiere does a good job of showing us the world of Mekakucity Actors with some intriguing characters. The animation has a very unique stamp mark of animation style that took real notice. The animation actually reminded me of Bakemonogatori anime series. It uses a lot of shadows and black with occasional bright colors. It was that type of wonderful animation that you don’t usually see a whole lot. It is certainly captivating. I actually looked into some further reviews mostly on ANN and apparently the director of Bakemonogatori and ,in general, the Monogatori anime franchise, Akiyuki Simbo, is also the director for Mekakucity Actors. It explained why Araragi looked so much like Shintaro and vice versa. It was a good thing just only watched Bakemonogatori a few months ago.
Despite some of the more confusing moments it was a good enough introductory episode that want to know more of Shintaro, Ene, and the other kids with eye abilities. It helps a bunch that the animation is a delightful experience to watch. Some very big withdrawal symptoms are being suffered as of now. Good thing the next episode is due out Saturday.
