The Underrated-The Unlimited: Hyobu Kyosuke Anime Review

The Unlimited-Hyoubu Kyousuke 2013 anime series

The Unlimited: Hyobu Kyosuke or also known as Zettai Karen Children-The Unlimited: Hyobu Kyosuke was an early 2013 anime series offering in the Winter 2013 Anime Season. Apparently, the series was a spin-off of the series Zettai Karren Children, not sure, of the anime or manga. Still the main reason why actually began it was had seen a few promo videos on Anime News Network and there was something in the animation and character designs that just looked really edgy and when it comes to animation I really like seeing a lot of that.

I basically came into the series very blind. One thing had going for myself was that at least knew the background story to an extent which was centered around the main character, Hyobu Kyosuke, who has silver hair and silver eyes known as an esper. An esper is usually a person with psychic powers. He also leads a sort of criminal organization named P.A.N.D.R.A.

Still going into the series hoped that luckily wouldn’t need to actually know much about the original series-Zettai Karen Children of which the characters of The Unlimited are based off. It worked great! Seeing The Unlimited: Hyobu Kyousuke does not require that you be familiar with the orginal anime series which have heard is out there. It is actually distributed by Section 23 (Sentai Filmworks) under the name Psychic Squad. The thing is The Unlimited: Hyoubu Kyousuke is so amazing! I can hardly see myself picking up the original anime series. I will sometime later, perhaps, but have heard by some anime fans who have seen Zettai Karen Children (Psychic Squad) that apparently the series is more lighthearted and comedic of which The Unlimited is not. The Unlimited is so epic precisely because there is this dark atmosphere and sweet intensity that is somewhat melancholic due to the characters’ own personal histories.

The series is one that is given to astounding animated action, fighting sequences because with the realm of psychic wars its easy to go in various exciting and hectic directions. It helps that Manglobe (Samurai Champloo, Ergo ProxyDeadman Wonderland) just in general did such a fantastic job with animation.

One of the stand out qualities to the The Unlimited: Hyobu Kyousuke is the soundtrack of the series. I refer to the opening theme songs and ending theme songs mostly and , okay, to the memorable insert song. The Opening Theme Song, Last Resolution, not sure who is sung by but considering most of the main cast voice actors sung most of the theme songs I am guessing the opening theme song may be credited to one of them. There is an English and Japanese version that pops up throughout the series. The first ending theme song known as Outlaws is credited to eyelis. A win for the series soundtrack. The shiver inducing ones though are the Brightest Light and Darkness Night again by some of the voice actors!

The story concept is very smart and the way Kyosuke is painted as a misunderstood anti-hero especially! He belongs to a criminal organization, yes, but it is up to the audience to decipher whether he is or he is not entirely validated in his views and beliefs. The series introduction begins with Kyosuke meeting Andy Hinomiya, a young esper, who many see his psyhic powers as useless but nonetheless Kyosuke sees something in him. Hinomiya decides to join P.A.N.D.R.A. unknowingly being drawn in by Kyosuke’s charisma much like other members of the organization who secretly fight to save espers.

While the series is 12 episodes it wraps up everything nicely towards its conclusion. If you have not heard of this series yet then try it! I swear it shall not disappoint.

NOTE: The Unlimited: Hyobu Kyousuke is available to watch on anime streaming website Crunchyroll.
