Manga Research Club Part 2-Love Stage!! Episode 1

Love Stage!!-2014 Director: Kenichi Kasai| Animation Studio: J.C. Staff

Now on the blog: Love Stage!! (2014) Anime Series Review

FIRST LOOK-Despite this being labeled yaoi I think it might be a softer version, so it is more like shonen-ai. That aside part of the reason wanted to see Love Stage!! was perhaps because Ryouma Ichijou was going to be voiced by Takuya Eguchi. He is known primarily for his more well-known roles that include Hachiman from My Teen Romantic Comedy is Wrong As I Expected, William Twining from Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist, and Mao from Hamatora and Re: Hamatora.

He has a very distinct voice and really wanted to see if he could voice a different range this time around in Love Stage!! It happened. His Ryouma Ichijou is certainly different from any other voice over roles he has ever done up to date. Add another character voice to his list of accomplishments.

Love Stage!! itself is very interesting and has quite the unique premise. You have an otaku , Izumi Sena, who is into anime and manga a lot. His favorite anime character is some magical girl type known only as Lala-Lulu. He is trying to run away from his responsibility of perhaps ending up following his family’s footsteps of being in showbiz to which he feels he has no talent in but somehow his family’s manager Rei Sagara has a thing for using Izumi’s older brother, Shougo, to convince him to do showbiz events. In one of these such events Ryouma is planning to reunite with Izumi.

Tsubasa Yonaga's roles as a voice actor

Tsubasa Yonaga. Well-known roles.

Takuya Eguchi's roles as a voice actor

Takuya Eguchi. Well-known roles.

I came in looking out for Takuya Eguchi’s voice acting performance but also noticed Izumi was being voiced by Tsubasa Yonaga. Some of you may know him as the voice actor of Teiichi from the Dusk Maiden of Amnesia anime series. Another of his more well-known roles may be Nagisa from Free! Iwatobi Swim Club and Free! Eternal Summer. While this is all good news too. Voicing Rei was Daisuke Hirakawa otherwise known as Rei from Free! Iwatobi Swim Club and Free! Eternal Summer.

Overall the first look had many surprises to which voice actors voiced which characters. The series itself has quite the fun and unique premise. After all, while it is certainly going to have some gender-bender moments where one guy may pursue another. Still that is not all since it will also obviously deal with relationship issues that occur when it comes to family. Add to that some surreal comedy that teases your average otaku. Yeah. It doesn’t seem like such a bad mix. Sounds very entertaining completely.

EPISODE 2 REVIEW-Ryouma goes for his love confession to Izumi but too bad he doesn’t know that not only is he an otaku but he is not exactly a girl. This episode you see that Ryouma has his own personality that he puts out there probably when he is in love with someone but with everyone else he is much more abrasive.

Ryouma happy about Izumi's reaction-Love Stage!! Episode 2

Blase attitude in Shougo-Love Stage!! Episode 2

What?! Is up with the blase attitude of Shougo’s? Takes an anime character to whole new levels of irritating.

It was nice to continue to see a dynamic relationship between the characters like Rei and Izumi’s dad. Rei and Shougo. And even Ryouma and Izumi. The animation continued to look very bright and smoothly animated as it seems may be J.C. Staff’s trademark. For reference see: The Hentai Prince and The Stony Cat.

Izumi imagines Lala-Lulu fantasy-Love Stage!! Episode 2

I really like this series already. It is marketed as yaoi but I would go as far as to say it is more shonen-ai than anything. While there are the said “yaoi moments”, so far they seem to be put in a most comical light that really doesn’t make them that out place to watch for some viewers not into the said yaoi anime or manga fare. Also let’s not forget that Izumi doesn’t even look like a guy on most ocassions and he usually looks like a girl!

I’ll be continuing to watch this series to the very end especially since it has an all-star voice actor cast.

Love Stage!! 2014 anime series

Izumi was born in a family of celebrities. His father is a singer, his mother and artist, his older brother the lead vocalist for the popular band Crashers. Izumi himself, however, is just a nerdy college student. He loves the manga “Magical Girl Lala Lulu” and dreams of becoming a manga writer himself. One day he is roped into filming a commercial where he wears a dress. Another actor on the set, Ryoma Ichijo, mistakes him for a woman and falls in love at first sight. As it turns out, though, they met ten years in the past. And Ryoma feelings don’t change when he finds out Izumi is a boy.

Love Stage!! OP

The OP is very cute and have to say the music is very nice as well as singing. Goes pretty well with the series. You can listen to and see the OP on Youtube. Thanks to seihaorg11.

Love Stage!! ED

ED also is pretty perfect for the series and just watching the changing visuals of Izumi and Ryouma are so funny. Think might favor this one more than the OP. So cute! You can listen to and see the ED on Youtube. Available from YukiOP.

  1. I agree, so far it’s more shonen-ai then Yaoi, but that could change. I just hope that they don’t make it so that Ryouma gets forceful and Izumi gets all “oh stop…” – but he secretly likes it. That almost rape stuff always rubs me the wrong way.

However, I’m with yeh – I’ve enjoyed it so far. It’s even funny at moments too.

    • Yeah. So far its looking more shonen-ai but who knows perhaps those working on the series may yet decide to change it up. We’ll have to see if it works. It depends how things change down the road.

🙂 It’s really funny. I especially like the otaku related jokes thrown around. Kind of pokes fun in a light manner.
