Can Anime Entertainment Be Disturbing or Kinky and Still Be Good?

This week’s reflection. Can anime entertainment be disturbing or kinky but still be good?

Diabolik Lovers

I think so. There are various levels of anime out there. While sure there are anime that can come off as kinky and horribly abusive as is the case with Diabolik Lovers. Doesn’t it mean then that Diabolik Lovers is only showing there is a market for kinky anime? If there isn’t one then there should be more of one. These types of anime and or Entertainment would be real guilty pleasures by many.

While they can be disturbing to watch for some we should be reminded that there are all types of Entertainment and no matter what they appeal to different types of people because just like how there are so many types of people out in the world there are many things that one person would not find to their liking that can appeal to some other person.

Hayao Miyazaki‘s family friendly but vividly imaginative animated worlds have a great place in the hearts of many. They are excellent anime with family friendly or honest values but then again that is behind the vision of Hayao Miyazaki where he might want to adapt real world limitations into his Fantasy worlds. Yet, this does not apply to all animated works. Some do not require all that realistic world baggage.

And anime like any other Entertainment while it is nice to try to measure whether it holds certain good values sometimes anime should not be taken that seriously since in the end they represent fictional worlds and nobody really should be judging values seen in anime with the norms of our accepted society. Those things are way different!

As it is Hayao Miyazaki’s anime films are really some of the rare exceptions I am sure. While there are few others I can think off but it is a case by case basis issue. Though in general anime should not be seen as a portal to attack the issue of for example Diabolik Lovers “is saying it is ok to harm women or not” or “this is sexist”. Diabolik Lovers as a series is never saying it is ok for women to get mistreated. It is all a fictional work. And maybe in this case anime fans should try to lighten up and not take it too seriously. After all if people enjoy a certain type of Entertainment sometimes it is merely for Entertainment’s sake.

As Sofia Vergara, one of my favorite actresses, Says It

People Need to Lighten Up! It’s only anime not real life depictions.
